Most lists of HostGator alternatives recommend Bluehost. Bluehost is the same company. So are Network Solutions, Domain.com, Crazy Domains, ResellerClub, BigRock, Vodien and SnapNames. Newfold Digital’s own brands page lists them together, and its company homepage names “Bluehost, Network Solutions, Crazy Domains, HostGator, Register.com and many others” as a single portfolio.
Switching between two brands owned by one parent changes your control panel and your invoice. It does not change who sets the renewal price, who owns the data centers, or who decides which brands get invested in next. If the reason you are leaving is the renewal increase or the support experience, a sibling brand is not an escape.
There is a second reason to look outside the group. Newfold is publicly concentrating on Bluehost. In November 2025 it announced that Bluehost is migrating to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, reporting “4-5X improvements in median response times” for customers already moved and stating the migration is “on track for completion in 2026.” HostGator is not mentioned in that announcement. A month later Newfold sold MarkMonitor, with CEO Sharon Rowlands saying the sale lets the company “strengthen our focus on Bluehost and Network Solutions.”
This guide compares seven hosts on the numbers HostGator publishes itself, and on one thing most comparisons skip: who owns them. Every figure was checked against first-party pages in September 2026.

Who Owns HostGator?
HostGator is owned by Newfold Digital, which also owns Bluehost, Network Solutions, Crazy Domains, Register.com, Web.com, Yoast and YITH. Newfold was formed in 2021 by combining Endurance Web Presence with Web.com Group. It is backed by Clearlake Capital and Siris Capital and serves nearly 7 million customers worldwide.
That matters for a practical reason rather than an ideological one. Newfold operates dozens of hosting brands on shared commercial policy. Renewal multiples, add-on pricing and support staffing are group decisions. Moving from HostGator to Bluehost moves you between two products of one company.
The group is also visibly reallocating. Bluehost received the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure investment and the accompanying performance claims. Newfold completed the sale of MarkMonitor to Com Laude on December 31, 2025, describing it as a way to “simplify our portfolio.”
Meanwhile HostGator is quietly narrowing. Its own hosting price chart marks Reseller hosting and Windows Shared hosting as “No Longer Offered” to new sign-ups. Gator Website Builder plans are grandfathered too. Existing customers keep their service, but the product line is not growing.
None of this predicts a shutdown, and we are not suggesting one. It is a reasonable signal about where engineering attention goes over the next few years, which is exactly what you are buying when you commit to a three year hosting term.
What Does HostGator Actually Renew At?
HostGator’s Hatchling plan renews at $10.99 per month on a three year term, $13.19 on a one year term and $17.59 month to month. These are not estimates. HostGator publishes them in its own price chart, alongside the rule that introductory rates hold “until the hosting plan renews.”
| Plan | Month to month | 1 year term, per month | 3 year term, per month | 3 year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchling | $17.59 | $13.19 | $10.99 | $395.61 |
| Baby | $24.19 | $18.69 | $16.49 | $593.61 |
| Business | $30.79 | $24.19 | $21.99 | $791.61 |
Two things follow from this table. First, the term you renew on matters as much as the plan you pick. Hatchling costs $10.99 or $17.59 for identical service depending only on billing frequency, a 60 percent difference. Second, month-to-month billing is the most expensive way to buy HostGator, and it is also the only way to keep flexibility.
We deliberately built this section on renewal figures rather than promotional figures. HostGator injects its introductory prices into the page with JavaScript, so they change by campaign and cannot be cited reliably. The renewal chart is published as a static help article, which makes it the honest basis for a three year comparison.
Which HostGator Costs Sit Outside the Plan Price?
HostGator charges $149.99 to migrate a single website onto shared hosting, and $15 per month for a cPanel licence on VPS and dedicated plans. Both are published by HostGator and both are absent from the plan cards.
The migration fee is the one that surprises people. HostGator’s site transfer article lists “Site Migration (offered at a $149.99 one-time fee for a single website)” and “Email Migration (offered at a $99.00 one-time fee for one email account).” Free migration exists, but only on VPS and Dedicated plans, only on a 12 month billing term, and only within 30 days of signup.
Compare that to the field. Hostinger offers unlimited free migrations. InMotion, GreenGeeks and SiteGround all migrate you free. On a two site move with one mailbox, HostGator’s published rate comes to $399, and four of the seven alternatives here charge nothing.
The cPanel licence is the second gap. HostGator’s price chart publishes VPS pricing in two versions, with and without cPanel, and the licence adds $15.00 per month or $180.00 per year. The Snappy 2000 NVMe 4 plan is $59.99 per month without cPanel and $71.99 with it. If you are comparing HostGator VPS against a competitor that bundles cPanel, add $180 a year before the comparison means anything.
Best Independent HostGator Alternatives
These three have no corporate parent and no private equity owner. Each states its ownership publicly.
1 DreamHost: Best for independence and printed renewal rates
DreamHost is employee-owned and prints the year-two price on the plan card.
What it does well. DreamHost has operated since 1997 and describes itself as having no private equity and no corporate parent. The web hosting page shows Launch at $2.89 per month on a one year term renewing at $10.99, or $1.99 on a four year term renewing at $7.99. Both renewal figures sit on the card, which removes the exact surprise that sends people looking for HostGator alternatives.
Key features:
- Renewal rate shown before checkout on every plan
- Month-to-month billing available on all plans
- Free WordPress migration plugin
- 30 day money-back guarantee
Pricing. Launch is $2.89 per month on a one year term, renewing at $10.99. The four year term is $1.99, renewing at $7.99.
Best for: anyone whose complaint about HostGator is the renewal jump rather than the service.
Limitations. Non-WordPress migrations are manual or handled as a paid service, and moves from Wix, Weebly or Squarespace can carry extra fees. See our full DreamHost comparison for the trade-offs.
2 InMotion Hosting: Best for the longest money-back guarantee
InMotion gives 90 days to change your mind on terms of six months or longer.
What it does well. Ninety days is three times the industry standard and long enough to test a real traffic pattern before the window shuts. InMotion is privately held and founder-led, and in July 2026 it marked 25 years of independent operation, stating it answers “to the people who run their infrastructure on our network, not to outside investors.” Free website migration is included on most hosting types and usually completes in 24 to 48 hours.
Key features:
- 90 day money-back guarantee on terms of six months or longer
- Free website migration
- cPanel on shared plans, so a HostGator move is straightforward
- US data centers on both coasts
Pricing. The Core shared plan starts from roughly $2.99 per month on longer terms and renews at about $10.99 to $11.99. Monthly billing is $14.49 and carries a 30 day guarantee instead.
Best for: migrating a live business site that needs a genuine testing period before you are committed.
Limitations. The 90 day window excludes monthly billing and dedicated servers. The pricing table renders term columns without labels, so confirm the term in the cart.
3 SiteGround: Best for support quality
SiteGround is still founder-owned and publishes an open rate card.
What it does well. SiteGround runs its own platform on Google Cloud and has never sold to a US corporation or investment group. Its published rate card lists StartUp at $24.99 monthly, $17.99 on 12 months and $14.99 on 24 months. Publishing a rate card at all puts SiteGround in a small minority. The first migration is handled free by their team.
Key features:
- Public rate card covering every billing term
- First expert migration free, plus a free WordPress migration plugin
- Daily backups with free restores
- 30 day money-back guarantee
Pricing. StartUp is $2.99 per month on a prepaid 12 month term and renews at $17.99 per month.
Best for: sites where support response quality is worth paying a premium for.
Limitations. The renewal is the highest here, and storage limits are firm rather than described as unlimited. Our SiteGround alternatives guide covers who that suits.
Best HostGator Alternatives for Value
4 Hostinger: Best for the lowest entry cost
Hostinger has the lowest renewal rate in this comparison and migrates you free without limit.
What it does well. The Hostinger web hosting page lists Premium at $2.99 per month, renewing at $10.99 against a regular rate of $11.99. Free unlimited migrations remove the single largest cost of leaving HostGator, where the published rate is $149.99 per site. Hostinger is a Lithuanian company and is not part of a hosting conglomerate.
Key features:
- Free unlimited website migrations
- Free SSL and a free domain for the first year
- Built-in caching and staging on Premium and above
- 30 day money-back guarantee
Pricing. Premium is $2.99 per month, requiring a 48 month prepayment of $143.52. It renews at $10.99 per month.
Best for: cost-driven buyers who will keep the site for four years and want the lowest total.
Limitations. The headline rate needs four years paid upfront, which is a longer commitment than HostGator’s three year term. The panel is hPanel rather than cPanel, so the interface will be unfamiliar. Compare it in our Hostinger alternatives roundup, and see Hostinger against Bluehost if you are weighing a Newfold brand anyway.
5 GreenGeeks: Best for renewable energy matching
GreenGeeks buys renewable energy credits at three times the power its platform draws.
What it does well. The platform is conventional cPanel shared hosting, which makes a HostGator migration simple, and the differentiator is environmental. GreenGeeks pricing lists Lite at $2.95 per month on a 12 month term. The company is founder-led and independently operated, founded in 2008. Website transfers are free.
Key features:
- Renewable energy matched at three times consumption
- cPanel, so account-level migration from HostGator is direct
- Free SSL, CDN and nightly backups
- 30 day money-back guarantee
Pricing. Lite is $2.95 per month on a 12 month term and renews at $13.95.
Best for: organisations that report on emissions and need a defensible hosting line.
Limitations. The renewal multiple is steep, and GreenGeeks states in its own FAQ that plans renew at the regular rate. Budget $13.95, not $2.95.
Best HostGator Alternatives With Flat Pricing
Neither of these has an introductory price, so neither has a renewal jump.
6 Cloudways: Best for flat pricing with no renewal step
Cloudways charges the same rate in month one and month forty.
What it does well. Cloudways sells managed hosting on top of DigitalOcean, Linode, Vultr, AWS and Google Cloud, billed hourly with no term. The entry plan is $11 per month for 1 GB RAM, one core, 25 GB storage and 1 TB bandwidth. A three day trial runs without a credit card, and one free migration is included per account.
Key features:
- Flat pricing with no promotional-to-renewal increase
- Hourly billing with no minimum term
- Free trial with no card required
- Choice of five underlying cloud providers
Pricing. The entry DigitalOcean server is $11 per month, billed at $0.0153 per hour.
Best for: buyers who want the three year cost to be a simple multiplication.
Limitations. Cloudways is not independent, and this guide should say so plainly. DigitalOcean completed its acquisition of Cloudways in September 2022. There is no money-back guarantee and no bundled email hosting. Our Cloudways and DigitalOcean comparison explains when to buy the managed layer.
7 Hetzner: Best for hourly billing with a monthly cap
Hetzner bills hourly, caps the monthly total, and requires no commitment.
What it does well. The bill never exceeds the published monthly cap, and deleting a server mid-month means you pay only the hours used. Traffic allowances are the most generous here at 20 TB per month at the German and Finnish locations. Hetzner is owner-managed and states it is not dependent on investors.
Key features:
- Hourly billing with a monthly price cap
- No contract and no minimum term
- 20 TB monthly traffic included at EU locations
- NVMe storage across the cloud range
Pricing. The CX23 instance is 5.49 euros per month for 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB NVMe, excluding VAT and excluding IPv4.
Best for: technical teams who can run an unmanaged server and want the lowest cost per gigabyte.
Limitations. This is the wrong product for most HostGator shared customers. There is no cPanel, no phone support and no managed layer. Hetzner also adjusted prices on June 15, 2026 and retired the widely quoted CX22, so older comparisons are stale. US locations include 1 TB of traffic rather than 20 TB. Start with our best VPS hosting guide if this tier is new to you.
Who Owns Each Alternative, and What Does Moving Cost?
Five of the seven alternatives here are independent of any hosting conglomerate, and five migrate you at no charge. The table sets ownership against the two costs that decide a switch: getting in and getting out.
| Host | Owner | Same group as HostGator? | Migration cost | Refund window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HostGator | Newfold Digital | Yes | $149.99 per site on shared | 30 days, first purchase only |
| Bluehost | Newfold Digital | Yes | Varies by plan | 30 days |
| DreamHost | Employee-owned, no parent | No | Free for WordPress | 30 days |
| InMotion Hosting | Founder-led, private | No | Free | 90 days on 6 month terms |
| SiteGround | Founder-owned | No | First migration free | 30 days |
| Hostinger | Hostinger International | No | Free and unlimited | 30 days |
| GreenGeeks | Founder-led, private | No | Free transfer | 30 days |
| Cloudways | DigitalOcean | No | One free per account | 3 day trial, no refund policy |
| Hetzner | Owner-managed | No | Self-managed | None advertised |
Bluehost sits in the table on purpose. It is the most recommended HostGator alternative on the internet and it is the one option here that does not change your parent company. Bluehost is a competent host with a genuinely lower renewal rate than HostGator, and it is receiving the group’s infrastructure investment. If your objection to HostGator is price, Bluehost may still be the rational answer. If your objection is the company, it is not.
One caution on the word independent. It is getting rarer and it expires quietly. FastComet was a standard recommendation on lists like this one until World Host Group acquired it in April 2025. Check ownership at the time you buy, not at the time the review was written.
How Should You Choose a Replacement Host?
Multiply the renewal rate by 36 months, then add migration and control panel fees. That number is the real cost of the decision. Introductory pricing affects only the first term and distorts every comparison built on it.
Work through four checks.
- Price the third year, not the first. HostGator Hatchling at $10.99 renewal is $395.61 over three years. Compare that figure, not $3.75.
- Match the billing term to your certainty. Month-to-month costs 60 percent more at HostGator, and it is worth it if you are not sure you will stay.
- Count the unbundled fees. Migration, cPanel licences, backups and security add-ons are separate line items at most budget hosts.
- Check ownership. If you are leaving because of a company decision, confirm the replacement is a different company.
Match the tier to the workload as well. A small brochure site belongs on shared hosting. An application with a database and background jobs belongs on a VPS or managed cloud, covered in our best cloud hosting guide. A WordPress site with real traffic often costs less overall on a managed WordPress host once maintenance hours are priced in.
How We Evaluated These Hosts
Every HostGator figure in this guide comes from HostGator’s own help articles, and every alternative price comes from the provider’s pricing page or an investor announcement, checked in September 2026.
We weighted four criteria:
- Published renewal pricing. Can a buyer find the year-two rate before paying?
- Ownership and independence. Who sets commercial policy, and is it the same company you are leaving?
- Cost of switching. Migration fees, refund windows and control panel compatibility.
- Unbundled fees. Charges that appear on the invoice but not the plan card.
Two decisions shaped what you see above. We built the HostGator section on renewal prices rather than promotional prices, because HostGator injects introductory rates into its pricing page with JavaScript while publishing renewal rates as a stable help article. Quoting the stable source is more useful and more honest. We also dropped FastComet from the shortlist after confirming it no longer advertises a price lock and was acquired by World Host Group in April 2025, which removes both reasons it usually appears on these lists.
We do not run synthetic uptime tests and do not claim to. This guide compares commercial terms, which are verifiable from first-party sources.
The Bottom Line
Choose DreamHost or InMotion if you want out of the Newfold group with a printed renewal rate. Choose Hostinger if the lowest three year total is the only criterion. Choose Cloudways or Hetzner if you never want a renewal increase again.
HostGator is not a poor host. Its shared plans are competent, its cPanel setup is familiar, and its published renewal rates are lower than SiteGround’s. The reasons to leave are specific: a $149.99 migration fee that competitors waive, a $15 monthly cPanel charge on VPS plans, and a parent company that is visibly directing its infrastructure investment toward Bluehost instead.
Before you move, do three things. Take a full backup rather than relying on your host’s. Confirm your renewal date and rate against HostGator’s price chart. Then price your shortlist over 36 months at the renewal rate, which is the only comparison that survives contact with your second invoice.
If you are still weighing brands inside the group, our Bluehost alternatives guide covers the other side of the same portfolio, and the Cloudways alternatives breakdown covers the managed middle ground.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who owns HostGator in 2026?
Newfold Digital owns HostGator. Newfold also owns Bluehost, Network Solutions, Crazy Domains, Register.com, Web.com, Domain.com, ResellerClub, BigRock, Yoast and YITH. The company was formed in 2021 from Endurance Web Presence and Web.com Group, and is backed by Clearlake Capital and Siris Capital.
Is Bluehost a real alternative to HostGator?
Bluehost is a different product but the same parent company. Its renewal rates are lower than HostGator’s and it is receiving Newfold’s Oracle Cloud Infrastructure investment. If your issue is price or performance, Bluehost is a reasonable choice. If your issue is the company itself, it is not a change.
How much does HostGator charge to migrate a website?
HostGator lists a $149.99 one-time fee for a single website migration and $99.00 for one email account. Free migration applies only to VPS and Dedicated plans, on a 12 month billing term, requested within 30 days of signup. Hostinger, InMotion, SiteGround and GreenGeeks migrate sites free.
What does HostGator cost after the introductory period ends?
HostGator publishes its renewal rates in its own price chart. Hatchling renews at $10.99 per month on a three year term, $13.19 on one year and $17.59 month to month. Baby renews at $16.49, $18.69 and $24.19. Business renews at $21.99, $24.19 and $30.79.
Which HostGator alternative is cheapest over three years?
DreamHost on a four year term is the cheapest at a $7.99 renewal rate. On standard one year terms, DreamHost and Hostinger tie at $10.99 per month, which is $395.64 over three years and matches HostGator’s own three year renewal rate exactly.
